Force of the theatre is in its unique thirst for life, and as a living organism theatre needs attention both from professionals and from spectators. The most important is that for a few days we will become citizens of the same country, we will breathe the same air, we will think with the same categories – categories of comprehension of the great sacrament of art. The name of this wonderful country is – Festival.
At present “Baltic House” Theatre-Festival together with the “Baltic International Festival Center” actively work in the following spheres:
Organization of international theatre festivals, such as –
“Baltic House” International Theatre Festival (held annually).
“Meetings in Russia”- international festival of Russian theaters from Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Baltic countries (held annually).
During the III Festival “Meetings in Russia” (2000) there was founded an Association of Russian Theatres from CIS and Baltic Countries “Theatre Commonwealth”. This Association continuously provides active support to Russian-speaking theatres and professional theatre schools which are working abroad;
“Monocle” - international festival of mono-performances (held every two years);
and many other festivals, such as Festival of Free Arts “Solnzevorot” /Solstice/ held in June at one of the shortest white nights with participation of theatres which are looking for new forms in the performing arts. The main idea of the Festival program is the expansion of relations between different kinds of modern youth culture; Festival “Gulf of Finland” held in 1995, 1996 and 1997 with participation of Russian and Finnish theatres which are looking for non-traditional artistic forms (realized together with the General Consulate of Finland in St.Petersburg and Institute of Finland in St.Petersburg); Festival “French Play on St.Petersburg stage” held in 1995 (realized together with the Institut Français in St.Petersburg); International Festival of Children Performances “Happy birthday, Astrid Lindgren” dedicated to 90th anniversary of the famous writer held in 1997 (realized together with the Swedish Institute (Stockholm, Sweden)). In 2003, the year of 300th anniversary of St.Petersburg, “Baltic House” was one of the organizers of the Month of European Culture dedicated to the city’s 300th birthday. In the framework of this Month “Baltic House” held XII International Festival of the Union of European Theatres (realized together with Maly Drama Theatre–Theatre de l’Europe; it was for the first time that festival of the Union of European Theatres (Paris, France) took place in Russia) and European Festival of Modern Dance “TanzTeatr” (realized together with Goethe Institut Inter Nationes in St.Petersburg);

Organization of Corporate Holidays;
Compilation of Theatre Database
- information on drama, folklore, vocal and choreographic companies working in St. Petersburg. “Baltic House” often works as an adviser to various international festivals and touring agencies due to the fact that information about cultural life in St.Petersburg is often quite random.
Thus, “Baltic House” is a unique structure of its kind, working systematically on promotion of common European information-cultural space, on restoration and strengthening of cultural relations between Russia and countries of the Baltic region, as well as European countries (though the main field of the activities of the “Baltic House” is still the Baltic region with which St.Petersburg traditionally has close economical and cultural contacts). Activities of the “Baltic House” in the Baltic region are realized with constant support of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the St.Petersburg Government and are of great public significance as they contribute a lot to consolidation of prestige of St.Petersburg as one of the most important cultural centers in the Baltic region. “Baltic House” actively takes part in the organization of Days of St.Petersburg Culture in various cities around the world (for example, Festival “Brilliant St.Petersburg”, dedicated to 300th anniversary of St.Petersburg, presented art of St.Petersburg all over Russia and abroad). “Baltic House” also tries to revive tradition of Days of Culture of various European countries in St.Petersburg (for example, almost every year “Baltic House” becomes one of the organizers of the project “Days of Dutch Culture/Window on the Netherlands”, when Dutch companies perform at most prestigious venues around St.Petersburg).
In many of its activities “Baltic House” receives significant support from various European cultural organizations, such as Baltic Circle (Helsinki, Finland), Baltic Sea Cultural Center (Gdansk, Poland), British Council (St.Petersburg, Russia), Felix Meritz Foundation, “Finland-Russia Friendship Society”, Goethe Institut Inter Nationes in St.Petersburg, IATC (International Association of Theatre Critics (Paris, France), IETM (Informal European Theatre Meetings (Brussels, Belgium)) – “Baltic House” is a member of IETM since 1998, Institute of Finland in St.Petersburg, Institut Françias in St.Petersburg, New Theatre Institute of Latvia (Riga, Latvia), Nordic Council of Ministers (Copenhagen, Denmark) and The Information Office of the Nordic Council of Ministers in St.Petersburg, NordScen (Nordic Center for the Performing Arts (Copenhagen, Denmark)) , Open Society Institute (New York, USA), Swedish Institute (Stockholm, Sweden), Theater Instituut Nederland (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Union of the Baltic Cities (Commission on Culture, (Szczecin, Poland)); Union of European Theatres (Paris, France) and others. “Baltic House” also realizes a lot of joint projects together with General Consulates of various countries in St.Petersburg and has long-standing contacts with various European theatres which allows constant exchange of experience and ideas.
